News update and Seattle

Hello everyone! The translations of my words into Japanese will take some time because Brian has a job now! Well it's a temporary job but it will last for a few months. It's in downtown Chicago and close to the train station. So Brian has less time to translate. I might try but I think Brian's Japanese is better than mine. So everyone, please do your best to read my English (I'll make the easy English easier!)

We went to Seattle to visit Mel, our friend from Japan. Mel was an English teacher for one year in Yano and we became good friends. She lives in Tacoma, which is 45 minutes from Seattle. On our first two days we went to Seattle to walk around. It was a little cold but not too bad. We went to Pike's Market, which is a famous market in Seattle. You can get almost anything. I even saw some maitake, but they are very expensive in America compared to Japan! It made me laugh. I also saw people throwing fish around. It was very cool! We also went to the first Starbucks and I bought a mug. I don't think the coffee tasted different from the Starbucks in Chicago or Hiroshima but it was fun to see where it all started.

The next day we were joined by Fish. Fish was in Japan for three years teaching English and he lived in Kure. We went to the Museum of Glass in Tacoma. Tacoma has a big glass industry according to Mel. We got to see people blowing glass and making beautiful sculptures. I saw so many beautiful things that I wanted to take home.

The last day we decided to go for a hike in the rainforest. The rainforest in Washington is very different from rainforests in places like South America or Singapore. This rainforest has lots of moss, pine trees, and mushrooms. We made temaki (handrolls in English) to take with us. I am a little out of practice at making temaki but they tasted alright. We stopped in a small town called Poulsbo which had lots of cute shops and bakeries. We bought some chocolate and bread there. THe hike was lovely. Brian likes moss a lot so he was really happy. It was an easy and fun hike. We really enjoyed ourselves. We took a ferry back to Seattle and ate dinner then went home. We flew back to Chicago the next day. It was great to see Mel and Fish and talk with them about their lives now as well as all the fun we had in Japan.

Easy English:
Hey guys! Brian has a job, but it is temporary. It is very easy to go to his job because it is close to a train station. So it will be hard for me to translate my blogs. Please do your best with the easy English!

School is over!!

Well my semester is over! I have a month off from school now which is really nice! I hope that I can update this blog more now that I don't have 800 papers to write and reflect on. It was a great semester and I worked hard. I also learned a lot and I'm excited about next term. Today I'm going to the library to get some books to read. I plan to read, play video games, write, and do LOTS of cooking (so look for more food pictures). Brian is also done with National Novel Writing Month so he will be doing more translation as well. So hopefully later today or tomorrow we will have an update on our trip to Seattle!

Thanksgiving photos!

Hello everyone! Last week was Thanksgiving in America. It's a day that we get together with our families and have a big meal. Brian and I took the train to visit my parents in Kentucky. The train was not as fast as the Shinkansen. I miss the Shinkansen. Anyway, here are the pictures and I'll write more about American Thanksgiving after this weekend. This weekend Brian and I are taking the JLPT N4. We've both been studying very hard so hopefully we will both do well.

Illinois is going to try and build a high speed train. Trains in America have a reputation of being late, so 85% more trains on time would be a big deal. It's very different from Japan, isn't it.

This is a teppenyaki restaurant in Paducah. In America, we call teppenyaki "hibachi" which Brian and I just can't say after living in Japan. The chef was from Thailand and he made a lot of jokes while cooking. It was still a fun time.

This is my Dad's house. I grew up in this house. I remember playing in the construction site while they were building the house. Brian says it is prefect in case of zombie attack.

My plate for Thanksgiving. There's turkey, cranberry sauce, corn, stuffing, a deviled egg, and a little bit of garlic mashed potatoes. I was really excited about the potatoes, my dad makes amazing garlic potatoes!

Our Thanksgiving table. The woman with blonde hair is Christy, my dad's girlfriend and her youngest daughter. It was a really nice meal with lots of fun conversation and good food.

Gizmo! This is Dad and Christy's dog and he is sooooooo cute! He's very affectionate too and likes to sit in your lap. I think I'm in love!

This is my dad the day after Thanksgiving. Because we have a lot of food many people eat leftovers for days after thanksgiving. My dad is making a turkey sandwich. He had just woken up and was a good sport about me taking this picture.

My Dad, Christy, and Gizmo. They often watch TV together. Today they were watching an American football game. University of Kentucky was playing University of Tennessee (the state below Kentucky) and UK won for the first time in years! Admittedly, UK is better at basketball.

Brian playing ball with Spiffy, my mom's dog. Brian usually doesn't play with dogs so I had to take a picture of him playing with Spiffy. Spiffy is an older dog and she is blind in one eye but she still loves to play ball.
