今週私はラズベリーとリコッタチーズのスコーンを作りました！ラズベリーがとても新鮮ですので、本当においしかったです。
私の教科書です。実はこの写真を撮った後にもう一本が着きました。今沢山の教科書を持っています。
私たちはアジアスーパーを見つけました！沢山のアジアの国の料理を売られています。日本で買った味噌と私の好きなだしがあります。大好きなシンガポールのココナッツジャムのカヤもあります！ブライアンは大きなキムチのジャーを買いました。いい匂いです！
ブライアンは一番好きな食べ物についてうれしかったです。

Moving Entry (a little late!)

We have officially moved to Chicago. When we lived in Japan Brian would usually tell people that he was from Chicago. Most people who live in the city would say that he isn't. Brian is from a suburb of Chicago, which is kind of like the wards that Tokyo or Hiroshima city have. Now we actually live in the city, in the Edgewater neighborhood. Our apartment complex has access to the beach and a beautiful private deck with grills for cooking and benches for reading. There are a lot of nursing homes and in fact one of my friends works almost across the street from me. I haven't seen her in three years and it's really great to have her so close.
We started on Monday morning at 9:00. Our friend Dave came to help us move. Brian's dad rented a moving van for us and even drove it (I was too afraid to drive the moving van!!!) We had put most of the furniture in the garage the day before so we didn't have to really bring things upstairs or downstairs on Monday. We moved the bed in first, it was a lot like a puzzle piece. I didn't realize we had so much stuff! We threw out a bunch of stuff the week before but we still had a ton of boxes and furniture. We drove to Chicago at around 11:30. It was a beautiful day. Brian, Dave, and I drove through the city. Because it was Monday midafternoon, traffic wasn't too bad. We drove down Lakeshore drive, which is just beautiful. We got to our apartment and I had to find someone to open the garage for us. Then we waited for Brian's parents to arrive with the truck (they had to take the long way because of the truck).
We only live on the 2nd floor so it was really easy for us to move things using the stairs and the elevator. Brian's dad also has his Ph.D in physics, which never hurts when dealing with moving objects. His mom and I stayed in the apartment, mostly unpacking, moving boxes and sometimes furniture in the place. Our living room is a little small and we were worried that everything wouldn't fit.
But it did when we moved things into our bedroom which is bigger. Our kitchen has an island so we sit there to eat. I have so much space when I cook and that makes me happy. And I have all my kitchen tools! We fished moving everything and unpacking a little before 5:00! It took us from 1:00 to 5 to move and unpack (and return the truck). Our books are still unorganized but everything is off the floor and really that's the important part. We'll organize more when we have time.
After moving we went out to Ethiopian food which is only ½ mile from our house. One of the best things about Ethiopian food is eating with your hands. You use bread, called Injera, to scoop up meat and vegtables. We have a lot of things in walking distance and I look forward to walking around the neighborhoods and finding all kinds of little things.

It's delicious!

We found the same shouyu that we used to use in Japan at the grocery store. I was very happy to see hiragnana and katakana again.

Weekend!
Regular English
This weekend was a very busy weekend. We were going to post photos on Friday but we had a special visitor, my mom and her boyfriend Ed. For those who don't know, my parents got divorced right before I came to Japan. They are both very happy now and are with people they love and care about. They arrived on Friday, a little late because of road work. We wanted to go into Chicago and go to the field museum but because of Lollapaloza, a really huge rock concert festival, getting into Chicago was too hard. They rented a hotel room for us too. Brian and I went to eat lunch and then I went back and visited with Mom and Ed for a bit. Ed is a retired engineer and he has a garden, a dog named Buster, and a private dock on the lake. Then we went to Brian's parents house to have dinner. They made salmon, chicken, and zucchini on the grill. Brian's mother made carmelita bars, which are chocolate, caramel, and a few other things (they're so good! But so bad for me!!!) and his dad made a cherry pie, crust and all, from scratch. He taught me how to do the special lattice top too. I can't wait to try it on my own. On Saturday morning we went out for breakfast and then Mom and Ed drove back to Paducah, Kentucky (My home town). I really missed my mom and it was good to see her and to meet Ed. They seem like a very nice couple.

We had another visitor this weekend, Brian's sister Katie and her two dogs Aspen and Maddy. Aspen is just a puppy. She was also dog-sitting her friend's dog Heidi. Heidi is very big but very nice. Katie and I went down town on Saturday so I could buy new running shoes. Because Katie is a very experienced runner I thought it would be good to have her come with me. The store was really nice and afterwards we bought cupcakes. She bought a black bottom one, no idea why it's called that. I bought a red velvet one. I really missed red velvet cake. I ran on the treadmill to break in my shoes and then Brian and I went for a walk. I also made fried okra for my in-laws. Brian's mother had never had Okra before.

Sunday we went to look at apartments in Chicago again because the other landlord disappeared. We looked at 4 apartments in the same area. The building we had applied to had another unit available. It was a little smaller but also 50 dollars cheaper. It still has the lovely private deck and you can walk right onto the beach. We found out that we can move in on the 15th! Now to go through all of our stuff.... We also ate Middle Eastern food. We could get some of this in Hiroshima City but the two things we couldn't find were baklava, a pastry made with nuts and honey, and stuffed grape leaves. So good! Hopefully my next post will be about moving...again!

Ed is a very nice guy. He was an engineer but he is retired now. We wanted to go to Chicago but there were many people going to a concert festival in Chicago, Lollapalooza (a big rock festival). We went back to our hotel and I talked with mom and Ed. Then we went to Brian's parent's house. They made dinner. We had salmon, chicken, and zucchini. Brian's mother made a dessert called carmelita bars. They are made with chocolate and caramel. They are delicious. His dad made a cherry pie. He taught me how to make a beautiful pie crust. I'm really happy. Saturday we ate breakfast at a restaurant and then mom and Ed went back to Paducah, Kentucky, my hometown.
Brian's sister Katie is also here. She has three dogs with her. Two of the dogs are her dogs. Their names are Maddy and Aspen. Aspen is very young. She is also taking care of her friend's dog Heidi. Heidi is very big but very nice. Katie and I went to downtown Geneva to buy running shoes today. After we bought the shoes we bought some cupcakes. Katie's cupcake was called “Black bottom” and was made of chocolate. I bought a red velvet cupcake, which is a red chocolate cake! I love cupcakes! I also made fried okra for dinner. Brian's mother had never had okra before!
On Sunday we went to Chicago. We had to find a different apartment. We visited four apartments. There was one that we liked in the same building. It has a private deck and beach. I'm excited about going swimming now! But I must wait until the 15th. That is the day we will move to Chicago. After looking at apartments we went to a late lunch. We had Middle Eastern food. Our favorite Middle Eastern foods are stuffed grape leaves and baklava. Baklava is a pastry made with nuts and honey. Both are delicious. You should try them!

先週末は本当に忙しかったです。私たちは土曜日に写真を書き込みた かったですけど、母と彼氏のエッドが訪ねていました！日本に行く前にレチェルの両親が離婚しました。でも、今二人ともは他の人と交際 中になってとてもうれしいです。彼らは土曜日にお遅く着きました。シカゴに行ってフィルドの博物館に行きたかったですけど、ロックコ ンサートの「Lollapaloza」がありますから、シカゴに行きにくすぎました。彼らは私たちにホテルルーム を借りてくれました。その後ブライアンと私は昼ご飯を食べに行って私はホテルに帰って母とエッドと喋りました。エッドは隠居の技術者 で庭とバスターの名前の犬と私設のドックを持っています。
その後私たちはブライアンの両親の家に晩ご飯を食べに行きました。 両親がグリルでサーモンとチキンとズッキニを料理しました。ブライアンの母はチョコとカラメルと他の材料を料理するカラメりたバーを 作って父はパイ皮とチェリーパイを作りました。父が私に特別のパイ皮を作る方を教えました。私は自分で作ることを楽しみにしていま す！翌朝私たちは朝ご飯に食べに行って私の母とエッドが私の郷里のパデゥカに帰りました。私は母が寂しかったですから母とエッドと 会って良かったです。いいコップルみたいです。
ブライアンの妹のけーティも訪ねました。妹は犬と二匹来ました。名 前は「Aspen」と「Maddie」です。アスペンは子犬です。妹は友達の犬のハイディを預かりました。ハイ ディはとても大きいですけど、優しいです。新しいラニンぐシューズを買うために私はケーティと買いに行きました。ケーティは走ること が得意ですから、私と買いに行くことがいいと思いました。店に行ってからカップケーキを買いました。ケーティは「ブラックボッテム」 のカップケーキを買いました。（その意味が分からないです。）私は「レッドベルべト」のカップケーキを買いました。 レッドベルべトが懐かしいですから本当に良かったです。私はトレッドミルで運動してブライアンと散歩しました。さらに私は焼きオクラ を料理しました。ブライアンの母がオクラをたべたのははじめてです。
他の家主が私たちに全然電話しませんでしたかた、日曜日にもう一度シカゴにアパートを探しに行きました。同じ近所でアパートを四つ調べました。私 たちの申し込んだアパートの建物に他のアパートがあります。前のアパートより少し小さいですけど、家賃が＄５０もっと安いです。まだきれいな私用 のデックがあって海岸の横にあります。私たちは１５日にアパートに移してもいいことが見つかりました。だけど、私たちの家蔵を選り分けなければな りません。それから中東風の食べ物を食べました。広島市で一部が見つかれましたけど私たちの見つからない食べ物がナッツとはちみつできるお菓子の バックラバと詰め込む（スタッフド）ぶどうの葉っぱです。すごくおいしかったです！次も入居のことを書き込みますよ！

先週末は本当に忙しかったです。私たちは土曜日に写真を書き込みた かったですけど、母と彼氏のエッドが訪ねていました！日本に行く前にレチェルの両親が離婚しました。でも、今二人ともは他の人と交際 中になってとてもうれしいです。彼らは土曜日にお遅く着きました。シカゴに行ってフィルドの博物館に行きたかったですけど、ロックコ ンサートの「Lollapaloza」がありますから、シカゴに行きにくすぎました。彼らは私たちにホテルルーム を借りてくれました。その後ブライアンと私は昼ご飯を食べに行って私はホテルに帰って母とエッドと喋りました。エッドは隠居の技術者 で庭とバスターの名前の犬と私設のドックを持っています。
その後私たちはブライアンの両親の家に晩ご飯を食べに行きました。 両親がグリルでサーモンとチキンとズッキニを料理しました。ブライアンの母はチョコとカラメルと他の材料を料理するカラメりたバーを 作って父はパイ皮とチェリーパイを作りました。父が私に特別のパイ皮を作る方を教えました。私は自分で作ることを楽しみにしていま す！翌朝私たちは朝ご飯に食べに行って私の母とエッドが私の郷里のパデゥカに帰りました。私は母が寂しかったですから母とエッドと 会って良かったです。いいコップルみたいです。
ブライアンの妹のけーティも訪ねました。妹は犬と二匹来ました。名 前は「Aspen」と「Maddie」です。アスペンは子犬です。妹は友達の犬のハイディを預かりました。ハイ ディはとても大きいですけど、優しいです。新しいラニンぐシューズを買うために私はケーティと買いに行きました。ケーティは走ること が得意ですから、私と買いに行くことがいいと思いました。店に行ってからカップケーキを買いました。ケーティは「ブラックボッテム」 のカップケーキを買いました。（その意味が分からないです。）私は「レッドベルべト」のカップケーキを買いました。 レッドベルべトが懐かしいですから本当に良かったです。私はトレッドミルで運動してブライアンと散歩しました。さらに私は焼きオクラ を料理しました。ブライアンの母がオクラをたべたのははじめてです。
他の家主が私たちに全然電話しませんでしたかた、日曜日にもう一度シカゴにアパートを探しに行きました。同じ近所でアパートを四つ調べました。私 たちの申し込んだアパートの建物に他のアパートがあります。前のアパートより少し小さいですけど、家賃が＄５０もっと安いです。まだきれいな私用 のデックがあって海岸の横にあります。私たちは１５日にアパートに移してもいいことが見つかりました。だけど、私たちの家蔵を選り分けなければな りません。それから中東風の食べ物を食べました。広島市で一部が見つかれましたけど私たちの見つからない食べ物がナッツとはちみつできるお菓子の バックラバと詰め込む（スタッフド）ぶどうの葉っぱです。すごくおいしかったです！次も入居のことを書き込みますよ！

Watermelons are very cheap in America. They are bigger than my head and we pay less 335 yen for one. We have been eating a lot of watermelon.
スイカはアメリカにとても安いです。私の頭よりもっと大きいで料金が３３５円より少ないです。私たちは最近たくさんのスイカを食べました。
Brian having a Strawberry Daiquiri. It's a drink made with strawberries, ice, and rum. We had it at a Mexican restaurant in Aurora, which is not very far from where we live.

In Japan many shirts have English on them. In America, many things have kanji on them. This is a mousepad.

Dip'n Dots. They're an ice cream but frozen into tiny balls. They're from Kentucky, like KFC and Rachel. Their headquarters is in my home town. I learned to drive a car in their parking lot.

Food, apartments and friends
Regular English
Brian and I have cell phones now! We went with his parents to get iphone 4s. Mine is white with a pink case and Brian's is black with a black case. There is still no space to put a cell phone charm even on our covers because cell phone charms aren't as popular in America as they are in Japan.
We have gone out to eat at a few restaurants with our friends. It's been odd getting used to the variety in our diet. We went to Mexican food on Friday night and had a quesaadilla, a tortilla filled with meat and cheese and vegetables. We also went to brunch the next day. For those who don't know, brunch is basically breakfast (br) and lunch (unch) together. Our favorite place is in Geneva, IL, a town not far from where Brian's parents live. They have a very cute downtown area. The restraunt is called Nosh. I had an omlet filled with spinach, goat cheese, and tomatoes. Most of the ingredients are bought from local farmers. Brian had a steak sandwich. Brian's parents also took us to the grocery store which is so big compared to Thanks. I really couldn't believe how much stuff was there. In America we usually buy groceries for one week or more instead of a few days so the carts are very big.

We are currently looking for apartments in Chicago because that's where my school is. On Saturday we went to Chicago to see the apartment finding service. In America, is is considered very important to go and look at the apartment before you buy it because they are all different. You can't just say what size and trust it will be the same as another apartment with the same area. We looked at 6 places in northern Chicago in an area called Rogers Park. It's a nice area and close to Lake Michigan so we could basically go to the beach whenever we wanted. We found two places we liked and applied for one of them. It's a little expensive but it's a very nice place to live and close to the trains. We're waiting to hear if we got the place.

We've been seeing our friends too and I will do a post about them with pictures soon! It feels in some ways like we never left. It's really nice to see everyone again.

This week we have been very busy! Brian and I bought new cell phones. We have iPhone 4. My phone is white. Brian's phone is black. It's very important to have a phone for us because of our jobs and apartment. There is nowhere to put a cell phone charm, which is sad. They are not popular in America.
We have been eat at restaurants a lot too. Here are some of the new foods we have eaten: Quesadilla- This is a Mexican food. It is meat, cheese, vegetables, and spices inside of a tortilla (flat thin bread). Brunch- a meal that has breakfast food and lunch food. I had an omelet with spinach, goat's milk cheese, and tomatoes. Brian had a steak sandwich. We are happy to have these foods but we also miss Japanese food.
We went to the grocery store too. It's very big. The carts are also very big. Most Americans buy food once a week. It's very different from Japan. We could not find Miso or Dashi! I was sad T.T
We must buy an apartment soon. We will be living in Chicago and there are many apartments in the big city. We went to see an apartment service. In America you must visit each apartment before you buy it because each building is different. We visited 6 buildings and decided which one we wanted. Now we are waiting to see if the building will let us live there.
We have talked to many of our friends too. It is good to see old friends again even if we miss all of you in Japan. I will post pictures of our friends with their names soon!

ブライアンはステーキサンドを食べました。そしてブライアンの両親はサンクスよりもっと大きなスーパーに私たちを運びました。建物がでかいで食品がいっぱいですから本当にびっくりしました。アメリカ人は一週間の食品を度々買いますから、ショッピングカートもでかいです。
レチェルの入った大学院がシカゴにありますから、シカゴにアパートを探しています。先週末の土曜日にシカゴでアパート会社と話し合いに行きました。アメリカ人にはすべてのアパートが違いますから、アパートを借りる前にそのアパートを探しに行くことが必要です。私たちは北シカゴのロジャーズパークでアパートを六つ調べました。安全な近所でミシガン湖の近くにありますから、海岸に行きやすい。好きなアパートを二つ見つけて申し込みました。家賃が少し高いですけど、駅の近くにあって良いアパートです。今まだ返事を待っています。
私たちは友達と会って近日レチェルは友達のことを書き込むつもりです。全然立ち去らなかったみたいです。また友達と会うことがいいですね！

Back in America!

Hey all! Sorry this entry is so late but our last few days ahev been busier than we thought. This entry is all about our actual trip back to Chicago from Japan. We spent the night at our favorite hotel, Hotel Active and woke up on the 28th and left Hiroshima. We waited in the bus center for about 2 hours since there was time between when our hotel checkout time was and the shinkansen to Osaka left. Our student from the Chiyoda Eikaiwa, Nakamura-san, Bono-san, and Yashiro-san came to see us off at the station. After we said our good byes Brian and I got on the train to Osaka. We changed to the airport train in Osaka and had plenty of time to get to our terminal. It was strange to see so many people speaking English! Brian thought it was strange to see so many different hair colors. We got to sit next to each other on the flight to Seattle. I had to laugh when they asked us what we wanted for our in flight meal because in almost every school I always taught a lesson about flying on an airplane and in-flight meals. I had the chicken and Brian had the beef. I watched some of the movies they were playing, Jane Eyre was my favorite because I had read the book when I was in high school. We tried to get some sleep but it's really hard to sleep on an airplane. The flight was only 11 hours and after we had tried to sleep they gave us breakfast, some fruit and pastry. We landed in Seattle on July 28th at 11am (earlier than we had left in Japan). We had to go through immigration and then through customs after getting our bags. We had to run to the other side of the airport and we just made it before the plane finished boarding. The downside was we couldn't sit together this time. There were a lot of screaming babies on the flight to Chicago but I was still able to sleep. We arrived in Chicago and were very happy to see Brian's mom and dad. We got all of our bags but one, which was on a later flight and would be delivered to us the next day. We ate a late dinner and I fell asleep at 10:30 on July 28. Being in my in-laws house is nice but I still sometimes forget I'm in America.

Hey guys! Today I'm writing about our trip from Japan to America. We had stayed in a hotel in Hiroshima city on the 27th. We went to the train station and waited for our shinkansen. Some of our students from our Chiyoda Eikaiwa, Nakmura-san, Bono-san, and Yashiro-san came to say good bye to us. It was very kind of them. We took the shinkansen to Osaka and changed trains to go to Kansai airport. There were many people speaking English in Kansai-airport. It was a little strange for us. Our plane went from Kansai airport to Seattle. It was 11 hours long. I could sleep a little. They also gave us 2 meals, breakfast and dinner. I had chicken for dinner and Brian had beef. It was just like the English textbook! I also watched the movies the airplane had. Jane Eyre was my favorite movie because I read the book when I was a high school student. We changed planes in Seattle and had to talk to immigration. We couldn't sit together on the plane to Chicago. When we got to Chicago it was 6:00 in the evening. We got our suitcases but one of them was not there. They said they would send it to us the next day. After dinner I was very tired. I fell asleep at 10:30 in the evening. It is good to see my family again but I miss Japan.
